T’puram: Procedural delays, disruptions caused by Covid-19 pandemic and the need for additional conservation works have stalled the restoration of the 700-year-old entrance pavilion at the historic Attingal Palace, with the project remaining incomplete more than three years after work began. The restoration of the heritage structure, undertaken by state archaeology department at an estimated cost of Rs 1.07 crore, was launched in Jan 2021 after a portion of the pavilion’s roof collapsed. However, only the roof renovation and flooring works have been completed so far, while the remaining works have remained stalled, according to source at Attingal municiplaity.Built using stone and wood in traditional Kerala architectural style, the entrance pavilion, locally known as the Mukhamandapam, is regarded as a fine example of state’s rich architectural and sculptural heritage. The state govt had announced plans to preserve the palace as a heritage monument in connection with 300th anniversary of Attingal Revolt. Though Rs 3 crore was earmarked in 2020-21 state budget for the project, implementation was delayed due to lengthy administrative procedures.“A detailed conservation plan was prepared after a section of the pavilion’s roof collapsed. While work commenced in Jan 2021, the Covid pandemic severely affected the pace of restoration, resulting in prolonged interruptions. In 2022, then archaeology minister Ahmed Devarkovil visited the site and stated that certain additional works were required to preserve the structure in its original form. However, no significant progress has been made since then,’’ the source said.Attingal MLA O S Ambika said works worth around Rs 1.5 crore had already been completed under the Rs 3crore project. “The proposed museum component could not be implemented due to space constraints and discussions are under way with the devaswom board to identify additional space. The museum will be established once adequate space becomes available. Efforts are on to complete the remaining works and preserve the palace complex in its original form,” she said.
