Nagpur: The Public Works Department (PWD) has directed the Besa-Pipla Nagar Panchayat to remove decorative embankments built on seven nullah bridges after finding they obstruct the free flow of stormwater. The decision was taken at a recent review meeting chaired by Public Works Committee chairman Mukesh Kale and attended by officials of the PWD, Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) and the Besa-Pipla Nagar Panchayat. The meeting reviewed area’s drainage preparedness before monsoon.PWD officials said the decorative embankments, built along the sides of the nullah bridges has reduced the drainage capacity of the bridges. The structures were intended to improve the appearance of the nullahs and discourage garbage dumping. However, it is obstructing the flow of stormwater. With the monsoon expected to intensify, the PWD has asked the Nagar Panchayat to remove the embankments on priority. The decision also follows the collapse of a decorative embankment on a nullahs bridge in Beltarodi during the season’s first spell of rain accompanied by strong winds. Officials said the removal exercise is expected to begin shortly, with the focus shifting from beautification to efficient stormwater management. The PWD stressed that keeping the drainage network free of obstructions is critical to preventing waterlogging and protecting residential areas during the monsoon season.
