The incident began on Sunday, when locals first noticed fish dying in the river. By Monday afternoon, thousands of dead fish had surfaced and drifted to the banks, creating a strong foul odour and raising fears of water contamination.

Videos of the incident, widely circulated on social media, drew the attention of officials. Taking cognisance, Rakesh Kumar Singh, additional district magistrate, (revenue), indicated that pollution is the likely cause behind the mass deaths, though a detailed probe is now underway to confirm the exact reason.

A complaint filed at Itaunja police station highlighted concerns that the contaminated water could harm other aquatic life, livestock, and even humans who depend on the river. Residents have demanded safe disposal of the dead fish and measures to prevent any potential spread of infection.

Responding to the seriousness of the situation, police teams from Itaunja, BKT, and Mal stations reached the site to assess the situation and assist in initial control measures.

Venkatesh Dutta, environmentalist and professor at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University said, “The cause of fish dying must be ascertained as death of fish inside the river is worrisome and it also indicates less dissolved oxygen level in the water of Gomti. The death of fish must be probed properly by the authorities.”
