Surat: A 40-year-old Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) employee died by suicide at his residence in Varachha on Thursday, just days after his wife died by suicide attempt with a man described as her lover.The deceased, originally from Maharashtra, worked as a beldar with the SMC’s Varachha Zone.Varachha police inspector A R Vala told TOI that the SMC employee was found hanged at his residence on Thursday morning. Police are investigating whether the death was linked to the emotional distress he experienced after his wife’s death.Earlier this week, the SMC employee’s wife, 29, poisoned herself near a temple in Variyav along with a man described by police as her lover. The SMC employee and his family rushed to the spot after learning about the suicides.Both were taken to SMIMER Hospital by a 108 ambulance. Doctors declared the man dead on arrival, while the SMC employee’s wife was in critical condition and was later shifted to a private hospital. She died during treatment.According to police, the SMC employee’s wife and the man worked at the same place and had developed a relationship. Both were married and had children from their marriages.Family members tried to console the SMC employee after he learnt of his wife’s death and the circumstances surrounding it. However, he was said to have been in severe distress.Police said the SMC employee hanged himself at his house from a ceiling angle. Further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. The couple’s two children are now left orphaned.
