Hyderabad: Former Medchal Malkajgiri special grade deputy collector Marri Vamshi Mohan was granted bail by a local court after spending more than two months in jail following his arrest by the Anti-Corruption Bureau.Vamshi Mohan was arrested in May after ACB sleuths allegedly uncovered assets worth nearly ₹6 crore, with officials claiming their market value was several times higher. The case triggered widespread attention owing to the scale of the alleged assets and the officer’s service background.Notably, the ACB did not file a counter-affidavit opposing the latest bail petition moved by the accused.“Notice of this petition has been given to the special public prosecutor (CIU), principal special court for trial of SPE and ACB cases, Hyderabad. No counter is filed on behalf of the respondent/complainant opposing this petition,” the ACB court observed in its order.The court granted bail on Vamshi Mohan’s fourth attempt. The ACB had successfully opposed his earlier bail pleas.As part of the investigation, the ACB has alleged that the officer acquired two luxury apartments in Kondapur in the name of an alleged associate. Officials informed the court that when they attempted to inspect one of the flats last month, the alleged associate refused to allow entry.Investigators are also examining Vamshi Mohan’s past postings, particularly in Serilingampally mandal, and have sought to question real estate businessmen and others to gather further evidence and establish the alleged financial trail.“From the date of entry into public service by the accused in 2005 till the date of search, the accused officer acquired assets in his name as well as in the name of his family members, relatives and benamis by indulging into corrupt and dubious practices to the tune of Rs 4.33 crore. His probable income from the different sources during the said period is arrived at Rs 1.60 crore. His total expenditure during the said period is arrived at Rs 80 lakh. The accused officer has acquired assets to the tune of Rs 3.53 crore disproportionate to his known source of income,” ACB officials said.The investigation into the alleged disproportionate assets and suspected benami holdings is continuing.
