Pawan.Tiwari1Chandigarh: A 51-year-old cyclist, Class IV employee at the Air Force Station, was killed after being hit by the ambulance of a VIP cavalcade at the lightpoint of Sector 31/Industrial Area, Phase 2 on Saturday. Police said CCTV cameras showed the victim, Sundar Lal, entering the road from the wrong side, despite it being closed for the cavalcade. The body has been kept in GMCH-32. The family has not yet filed a formal complaint, saying they would take a decision when the brother of the deceased came from Bangalore.Police said the cavalcade was heading towards Chandigarh airport in Mohali at around 5.45pm. Traffic police and personnel from the Sector 31 police station were deployed on the route. As the cavalcade reached the lightpoint of Sector 31, Sundar Lal allegedly entered the road from the wrong side, and an ambulance that was part of the cavalcade hit him, leaving him critically injured.Police rushed him to GMCH-32, where he succumbed to injuries. Sector 31 police said that examination of CCTV camera footage revealed that the victim had entered the road from the wrong side. They also said that the ambulance driver tried to apply brakes 20 to 25 metres away from the victim but could not avert a collision. The body of the deceased has been kept in the mortuary of GMCH-32 for an autopsy. In a separate accident, a 35-year-old biker was killed after being hit by a truck and car in Industrial Area, Phase 1. The deceased was identified as Bablu, a resident of Dhanas.In his complaint to the Industrial Area Phase 1 police, Ravi Shankar, the victim’s brother, said that Bablu worked at a factory in Industrial Area, Phase 1. Ravi stated that his brother told him before his death that on Feb 9, 2026, he was going to his workplace on a bike. As he reached the area near the lightpoint, a truck driver reversing his truck hit his bike. While falling on impact, he collided with the left side of a car, which was allegedly being driven at high speed. The car ran over him. The car driver stopped and with the help of passers-by, pulled him out from under the car and admitted him in GMCH-32, where he succumbed to injuries.
