Patna: The Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) reached a major research milestone on Tuesday by receiving its first Indian patent from the Indian Patent Office. The achievement is being seen as an important step towards strengthening research and developing technologies with practical applications.The patented technology, titled “Zero rpm-synthesized tunable plasmonic hollow silver nanoshells in the first and second near-IR windows for enhanced solar-catalysis,” has been developed by a research team led by Amiya Priyam of the university’s department of chemistry. CUSB research scholar Bhavesh Kumar Dadhich and Bhavya Bhushan of KIIT-Bhubaneswar are also part of the team.In simple terms, the invention is a new, energy-saving way to make tiny, hollow silver particles. Unlike conventional methods, the process does not require magnetic or mechanical stirring, making it simpler and more environmentally friendly.“These tiny silver shells have special optical properties that allow them to absorb sunlight, particularly in the near-infrared range. This could make them useful in solar-energy applications and certain medical technologies,” Priyam said.The researchers have also demonstrated that the material can help use sunlight to break down harmful dyes such as Methyl Orange and Bromocresol Green, commonly found in industrial textile waste. Importantly, the process works even with very small amounts of the catalyst.The technology may also have future applications in cancer diagnosis and treatment, particularly in techniques that target deep tissues.The research was funded by the department of science and technology (DST), govt of India, and findings from the work have been published in reputed journals of the American Chemical Society and Royal Society of Chemistry.CUSB vice-chancellor Kameshwar Nath Singh congratulated the research team and said the university was working to strengthen research infrastructure and build stronger links with industry so that innovative research could eventually be converted into useful technologies and commercial products.
