Gorakhpur: A criminal accused in burglary cases was arrested after a police encounter in Ramgarh Tal area of Gorakhpur late on Monday night.The accused, identified as Mohammad Shehzade (30) of Turkmanpur’s Nai Masjid locality under Rajghat police station, sustained a bullet injury in his left leg during the exchange of fire. He has around 25 cases registered against him in Gorakhpur and Sant Kabir Nagar, including charges under the Gangsters Act, said police. He is alleged to be a member of a gang of burglars.Police have seized four gold bangles, a ring, a mangalsutra, a necklace, cash worth Rs 10,000, a motorcycle, a country-made pistol and live cartridges from the possession of the accused.Following a tip-off, a team conducting vehicle checking tried to stop a suspect on a motorcycle around 1 am. The suspect allegedly tried to flee and opened fire on the police. In retaliatory firing by police, Shehzade was injured and subsequently arrested.During interrogation, Shehzade revealed the names of his associates, including Niyaz Ahmad, his accomplice in thefts. Police have launched efforts to trace and arrest the remaining gang members.SP City Nimish Patil said Shehzade was wanted in connection with a burglary reported in Ramgarh Tal area on Aug 20. CCTV footage from the crime scene had helped police identify him, following which teams were deployed to track him down. He is undergoing treatment at the district hospital.
