Kolkata hosted a two-day academic programme organized by the Association of Plastic Surgeons of West Bengal

KOLKATA: A two day academic programme on plastic surgery in Kolkata saw various aspects of this super specialty subject being deliberated.Organised by the Association of Plastic Surgeons of West Bengal (APSWB) its Mid-Term CME 2026 brought together nearly 100 medical professionals, including plastic surgeons, MCh post-doctoral trainees, distinguished delegates, and eminent speakers from all over the country.The event focused on contemporary and rapidly evolving areas of plastic surgery, with the central themes encompassing craniofacial surgery, cosmetic surgery, orthognathic surgery, and gender-reaffirmation surgery.The scientific sessions provided an opportunity for specialists and trainees to discuss recent advances, evolving surgical techniques and the expanding scope of reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery.The conference was inaugurated in the presence of state health minister Sharadwat Mukherjee as the chief guest.The health minister who himself if a qualified modern medicine practitioner highlighted the increasing scope and expanding domain of plastic surgery and its contribution to modern healthcare.Mukherjee emphasised the importance of super-specialisation in medical science in developing expertise and improving the quality and delivery of healthcare services.The health minister also spoke about the Government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and medical services in the state.He encouraged young doctors and surgeons to consider career opportunities in the government healthcare sector, referring to the professional growth and job security available within government service amid increasing competition in the private healthcare sector, along with importance of young specialists contributing to strengthening public healthcare.The CME brought together established specialists and young surgeons, creating a platform for academic exchange, professional interaction, and knowledge sharing.The participation of MCh trainees was particularly significant in encouraging the next generation of plastic surgeons to engage with emerging developments and subspecialties within the field.Doctors attached tom APSWB said the organisation was committed to continue academic initiatives that promote the advancement of plastic surgery, professional education, multidisciplinary collaboration, and improved patient care.
