Agartala: Leader of the opposition and CPM Tripura state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Sunday said the party would launch statewide agitations over alleged deterioration in law and order, the condition of national highways, unemployment and price rise.Announcing the programme, Chaudhury said farmers’ and labour organisations would organise their first protest through “Jail Bharo” marches in all subdivisions on Aug 10 to press for the public demands, followed by other forms of protest across the state against the BJP-led govt.Chaudhury said the party adopted a series of decisions to mobilise public opinion against what he described as the BJP govt’s “failure” on governance and public welfare.

Chaudhury alleged that law and order in the state had deteriorated drastically during the BJP’s eight-and-a-half-year rule. He claimed democratic and constitutional rights were being routinely violated and cited recent incidents in Belonia, Mohanpur, Kamalpur and other places, alleging attacks on CPM workers and offices.Referring to the death of DGP Anurag Dhankar, Chaudhury reiterated the party’s demand for an inquiry under the supervision of a sitting high court judge. He questioned what he termed contradictory public statements regarding the circumstances of the officer’s death and expressed doubts over the ability of the Special Investigation Team (SIT).He also accused the govt of corruption in infrastructure projects, alleging poor execution of national highway works and claiming several contractors abandoned projects, delaying repairs. He said monsoon conditions affected Tripura’s road connectivity with the rest of the country. He further alleged that BJP leaders, including MLAs, were pressuring contractors for money, hampering development and increasing black money circulation.The CPM leader also expressed concern over rising power tariffs and unemployment, alleging that more youths were leaving the state in search of jobs. “The price of essential goods has increased manifold over the last few months. The price of rice increased at least Rs 5-8 per kg in a month, along with most of the consumer goods, but there is no action from the govt,” he said.
