Several parts of the city remained inundated in water on second day as the rain water is yet to recede
Surat: As torrential rain submerged large parts of Surat, police teams waded through waist-deep water, used ropes to reach stranded families and deployed tractors, earth movers and boats to rescue at least 6,100 people over Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.The city received 358 mm of rain in 24 hours, inundating residential areas and leaving thousands trapped as roads turned into massive water bodies. While rescue teams struggled to reach several interior pockets, police stepped in, carrying out operations through the night to evacuate residents, including pregnant women, infants and the elderly.“Sarthana, Saroli, Godadara, Puna, Limbayat, Dindoli, Sachin, Bhestan, Pandesara and Khatodara witnessed severe waterlogging. Our teams entered interior areas with ropes where vehicles could not reach. We also coordinated with the NDRF and fire department for boats,” police commissioner Wabang Jamir told TOI.He said more than 6,100 people were shifted to safer locations, while food, drinking water and milk were supplied wherever required.One of the most challenging rescues took place near the Kharwasa bridge on the Dindoli-Bhatiya road, where 18 people were stranded after floodwaters submerged the approach road. DCP Rajesh Parmar led the operation, with police using ropes to bring the stranded people to safety.In Dindoli, police reached the flooded Shivnagar slums and nearby residential societies by walking along railway tracks after roads became impassable. More than 300 people were evacuated.Pandesara police rescued around 600 residents from Bhedwad Khadi, Pandesara village and Laxmi Homes, including two pregnant women, two elderly women and two people who were unwell.In Khatodara, DCP Nidhi Thakur supervised the evacuation of residents from the inundated Azad Nagar area.
