Bhubaneswar: Odisha police on Tuesday called for stronger coordination with neighbouring states to tackle inter-state organised crime and prevent any resurgence of left‑wing extremism (LWE).At a virtual meeting of the eastern regional police coordination committee, hosted by Odisha police and attended by DGPs of Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh along with officials of central paramilitary forces, senior officials flagged concerns over cross‑border drug trafficking and other organised crimes.The deliberations stressed the need for joint strategies, intelligence‑sharing mechanisms and technology‑driven policing. “Our objective is to strengthen inter-state coordination to effectively combat organised crime, drug trafficking, left‑wing extremism and other emerging security challenges,” said DGP Y B Khurania. He said collaborative platforms of this nature are vital for operational synergy, mutual trust and reinforcing the country’s internal security architecture.Khurania cautioned that while LWE has been largely eliminated, vigilance and coordination remain essential to ensure Maoists do not regroup. “Contemporary security threats such as organised crime, cybercrime, narcotics trafficking and human trafficking transcend geographical boundaries and therefore demand a coordinated, technology‑driven and intelligence‑led response,” Khurania said.He emphasised that no state can address these challenges in isolation, underscoring the importance of continuous intelligence sharing, seamless information exchange, adoption of advanced technology and close interstate cooperation to counter increasingly sophisticated criminal and extremist networks.According to police sources, the day‑long deliberations covered a wide range of strategic issues. Detailed discussions were held on monitoring and rehabilitating surrendered Maoists, evolving coordinated strategies to curb interstate narcotics trafficking, strengthening cooperation against cybercrime through real‑time intelligence sharing, expediting transfer and time‑bound investigation of zero FIRs, enhancing railway security, and developing a unified strategy to address illegal infiltration.The participating states also deliberated on strengthening coordinated operations against interstate criminal networks, improving policing in border areas and enhancing technology‑enabled, intelligence‑based policing mechanisms.Khurania said the decisions and recommendations emerging from the deliberations would significantly strengthen interstate cooperation, enhance law enforcement capabilities, reinforce national security and provide a robust framework for addressing complex security challenges across eastern India.
