Panaji: The North Goa consumer disputes redressal commission ordered a construction company to pay Rs 2 lakh, along with interest of 8%, to an Assagao resident over deficiency in service. The commission also directed the company to pay Rs 25,000 for mental torture and litigation costs.According to the complaint, Sairaj Talkatkar, a resident of Assagao, in July 2024, engaged the services of the construction company Classic Modular Kitchen for the renovation of his kitchen.On Aug 11, 2024, Talkatkar paid the construction company Rs 2 lakh based on an oral agreement between both parties, and the company agreed to complete the work within three weeks of the date of the payment.Talkatkar made several attempts to contact the company, but they made excuses that they did not receive stock and, therefore, failed to provide services to him. Due to the prolonged delay of the renovation, Talkatkar’s house was a mess, and they struggled to locate their belongings.Talkatkar sent a legal notice to the construction company, but it did not respond to the complaint and returned the notice endorsed as ‘Unclaimed’.The commission, presided over by president Bela Naik and member Auroliano de Oiveria, observed that the construction company, in spite of having a close friendship with Talkatkar’s brother, did not deliver the services as promised. Moreover, the construction company gave multiple assurances to Talkatkar that the work would be done sooner, and found the construction company liable for cheating Talkatkar.The commission also ordered the construction company to pay Rs 2 lakh to Talkatkar, along with Rs 25,000 for mental torture and litigation costs.
