Varanasi: Governor and chancellor Anandiben Patel on Tuesday urged universities and colleges named after great personalities to educate students about their lives and contributions to the nation, so that they can draw inspiration from them. She also stressed the need to promote technical education to make youth self-reliant and reduce migration to other states for employment.She was addressing the third convocation of Maharaja Suheldev University in Azamgarh. The governor expressed happiness over the increasing participation and achievements of girls in education.A total of 74 students were awarded 88 degrees, while 20 medals were presented to meritorious students for outstanding academic performance. Girl students outnumbered boys among the degree recipients, with 48 females and 26 males receiving degrees. Eleven students were awarded undergraduate degrees and 63 received postgraduate degrees.Before the ceremony, Patel inspected various stalls set up on the university campus and interacted with those present. During the programme, she awarded degrees and certificates to meritorious students. Kits were also distributed for Anganwadi centres, while efforts related to HPV vaccination for girls were acknowledged.The governor appreciated performances by students of a composite school on the themes of environment and patriotism. She also launched the process of integrating mark sheets and degrees into DigiLocker by pressing a button on a computer. She released the university’s half-yearly magazine and six books authored by faculty members.Vice-chancellor Prof Sanjeev Kumar highlighted the university’s academic progress, achievements, objectives of the convocation and future plans. He also administered an oath to the meritorious students.Uttar Pradesh higher education minister Yogendra Upadhyay described Azamgarh as a historic land of sages, scholars and literary figures. He said education is the key path to progress and extended his best wishes to the students, urging them to always respect their parents and teachers.Padma Vibhushan awardee Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia also attended the ceremony, praised the event and blessed the meritorious students.
