Ahmedabad: A jewellery firm’s employee was allegedly robbed of 5kg of silver worth Rs 12.48 lakh after being distracted by unidentified men on a busy city road, police said. An FIR was registered with Ellisbridge police on Thursday.According to the complaint filed by Alpesh Patel (48), an employee of Hallmark Jewellers on Science City Road, the incident occurred on Wednesday evening while he was transporting silver from a shop on CG Road to Manek Chowk.

Patel told police that he had been instructed by his employer to collect the silver from a jewellery store at Super Mall on CG Road and deliver it to a firm in Manek Chowk. After collecting 10 silver blocks weighing 500g each and placing them in a cloth bag, Patel exited the mall only to find that his scooter had been towed away by police.He went to the Mithakhali towing station, retrieved the scooter, and placed the silver bag in the vehicle’s boot before heading towards Manek Chowk. Around 5.30pm, near a hospital road, a motorcyclist wearing a helmet stopped him and accused him of causing an accident.Patel said the man intercepted him again near a spine hospital, engaged him in conversation, and led him a short distance away to show alleged damage to his motorcycle. While Patel was distracted, two other men arrived on another motorcycle, opened the scooter’s boot, and fled with the silver bag. The first man also left soon after.Patel immediately informed his employer and alerted the police control room before reaching the police station. However, as his employer was out of town, he was asked to return later to lodge a formal complaint.On Thursday, Patel, accompanied by his employer, approached Ellisbridge police, who registered a case of theft and cheating against unknown persons. Police said CCTV footage from the route and nearby areas was being scanned to identify the suspects and trace the stolen silver.
