Amruta Fadnavis being felicitated during an event in Nagpur

Nagpur: Social worker and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’s wife, Amruta, on Tuesday accused Congress of attempting to create ‘its own Constitution’ amid the ongoing controversy over the singing of Vande Mataram at the party’s headquarters in New Delhi.Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a hackathon and ideathon at VNIT, Fadnavis said the Vande Mataram Bill had been passed by Parliament and questioned Congress’s decision to sing only the first two paragraphs of the national song instead of its complete five-paragraph version.“Parliament is a pillar of democracy. If you disrespect a bill passed by Parliament, it amounts to disrespecting the Constitution,” she said.Amruta Fadnavis also said the proposed anti-conversion law could contribute to women’s empowerment, while stressing the need to respect the constitutional and parliamentary process. Responding to questions on Jantar Mantar protests, she said that the movement started as a protest over the NEET paper leak, but many anti-social elements got involved at a later stage.Addressing speculation over CM Fadnavis’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, Amruta said there was no reason to assume that he was being considered for a larger responsibility at Centre. She said Fadnavis was from Nagpur and his calling was to serve Maharashtra. “Whenever Devendraji visits Delhi, speculation begins about whether he is being given a new responsibility. But what responsibility could be greater than Maharashtra? It is the ultimate responsibility,” she said.
