Srinagar, Oct 2: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) on Friday observed the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at Congress Bhawan, M.A. Road, Srinagar.
Senior Congress leader and former legislator Bashir Ahmad Magray presided over the programme, where party leaders and workers paid floral tributes to the two leaders and recalled their contributions to the freedom struggle, nation-building and public service.
Later, Congress workers attempted to march towards Lal Chowk as part of a “Vote Bachao–Desh Bachao” protest over electoral processes and the functioning of the Election Commission of India.
The march, led by Srinagar District Congress Committee president Dr Audil Farooq Mir, was stopped by security personnel outside the party headquarters. The protesters subsequently continued their demonstration at the spot.
The Congress demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), and restoration of names it alleges were deleted from electoral rolls.
The party reiterated its allegations concerning the electoral process and called for greater transparency and accountability in constitutional institutions. The Election Commission has rejected allegations of electoral manipulation made by Congress leaders.
The protesters said the party would continue to raise the issues through peaceful and constitutional means.
Senior Congress leaders, district and block functionaries, Youth Congress and Mahila Congress members, Seva Dal workers and others participated in the programme and protest.
