Kolkata: State Congress on Monday staged protests across Bengal after the party’s state president Subhankar Sarkar was attacked on Sunday when he had gone to Khejuri to distribute relief material among the victims of political violence. His vehicle was attacked near Haldia while he was returning from Hijli. Alleging that the attackers carried sticks and other weapons, Sarkar has filed a complaint at Haldia police outpost. “This is not just an attack on me or Congress workers — it is an attack on democracy. BJP understands that Congress is emerging as the only alternative that stands fearlessly with the people. That is why they have resorted to violence and cowardly attacks,” Sarkar said.
