Nagpur: Police detained protesters of the Nagpur Gramin Congress Committee at Raj Bhavan gate on Wednesday during a demonstration against the lathi charge on students agitating at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and the detention of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra outside the PM’s residence in the capital.MPCC general secretary Kunda Raut, who was among those taken away by police during the protest, said the action amounted to suppression by the central govt and sought judicial scrutiny of it. Raut said, “This is strong handedness by the central government and we want our judiciary to take note of it. Our leaders did not stand there for themselves, they stood there for justice for our students, and they were met with suppression instead. This is nothing but murder of democracy.”Later Raut was detained. Congress party workers, in the presence of former cabinet minister Sunil Kedar, raised slogans protesting against the Delhi incident.Congress party members at the spot said, “We stood here peacefully against the lathi charge on our students in Delhi, and the police showed us cruelty on the orders of the government.” They added that the party would continue to press the students’ demands despite the police action.The protest was organised by Nagpur Gramin Zilla Congress Committee president Ashwin Bais.
