Lucknow: As minimally invasive procedures gain ground in the treatment of heart valve disease, cardiac surgeons from across the country gathered at SGPGIMS to examine when catheter-based interventions should be preferred over conventional surgery and where open-heart procedures continue to deliver better outcomes. The discussions were held during the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery’s (CVTS) 39th Foundation Day celebrations, themed “Management of Heart Valve Diseases – A Reappraisal.”Experts discussed minimally invasive mitral valve surgery, transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI/TAVR), treatment of failed valve procedures, and the management of valve disease in both children and adults.Hands-on workshops trained surgeons in advanced procedures, including aortic root enlargement, aortic root replacement, and the Ross operation.Speakers highlighted the growing shift towards personalised treatment, with specialists choosing between surgery and catheter-based interventions based on a patient’s age, valve anatomy, overall health, and expected long-term outcomes.Former CVTS department head Prof PK Mittal was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for establishing Uttar Pradesh’s first paediatric and neonatal cardiac surgery programme.SGPGIMS Director Dr RK Dhiman said the institute would continue to strengthen advanced cardiac care through research, innovation, and specialised training.
