Coimbatore: A 43-year-old man was arrested on Friday for assaulting his mother with a log at their residence near Vadavalli on Thursday night.The Vadavalli police identified the arrested person as C Karuppusamy, 43, of Kalveerampalayam. A drunkard, Karuppusamy was in the habit of getting money from his mother C Marugathal, 68, to buy liquor, a police officer said. “Marugathal, a daily wage employee, was unwell in the past week and had not gone for work. On Thursday night, Karuppusamy came home drunk and demanded money from his mother to consume more alcohol. Marugathal refused to give him money,” the officer said. Karuppusamy lost his temper and entered into a verbal spat with his mother, he said. “In the heat of the moment, he took a log and assaulted his mother indiscriminately. Marugathal suffered injuries to her hands and hip. On hearing her scream, neighbours rushed to the spot and rescued her.” Marugathal was taken to a private hospital near Vadavalli, where she was admitted for treatment. On Friday, she lodged a complaint with the Vadavalli police, who registered a case against Karuppusamy under sections 296(b), 115(2), 118(1), 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women (Amendment) Act. He was produced before a judicial magistrate and lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison under judicial custody.
