Coimbatore: The Coimbatore region of the income tax department reported a steady rise in gross direct tax collections, increasing from ₹17,350.93 crore in FY 2023–24 to ₹20,635.71 crore in FY 2025–26, chief commissioner of income tax Sanjiv Shankar, IRS, said on Friday. He added that more than 14 lakh unique taxpayers had voluntarily complied in FY 2025–26, indicating growing confidence in a transparent and citizen-centric tax administration.The remarks were made at the 167th Income Tax Day celebrations held at the convention centre of Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology, Kuniamuthur, where Shankar presided over the event. In his address, he outlined the department’s focus on revenue administration, taxpayer services, infrastructure development and employee welfare.Shankar said the department was strengthening “seamless, transparent and predictable” taxpayer services through simplified processes, timely grievance redressal, multilingual communication and technology-enabled delivery. He referred to stakeholder consultative meetings across the jurisdiction and the rollout of ‘PRARAMBH’, an awareness initiative on the Income Tax Act, 2025, conducted in Coimbatore, Tirupur and Ooty.On infrastructure, he said an office-cum-residential complex at Tirupur is progressing and a proposed complex on Thadagam Road, Coimbatore, is in the pipeline. Employee welfare initiatives include health awareness programmes, preventive check-ups, yoga, stress management workshops and crèche facilities.The department conducted competitions for school and college students, including painting and colouring events for children with special needs. Senior officials, leading taxpayers, tax professionals and industry body representatives attended.
