NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Saturday imposed traffic restrictions across the national capital from 6 am, with diversions planned at several locations ahead of the CJP’s protest at Jantar Mantar against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, during which the group is demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.Police personnel were deployed in large numbers, manning barricades and monitoring vehicles as security was tightened ahead of the demonstration. The arrangements come amid traffic restrictions, metro curbs, train cancellations and a mobile internet suspension in parts of the capital.Delhi Traffic Police has cautioned commuters about possible disruptions around Connaught Place, Mandi House, Jantar Mantar, Patel Chowk and other major intersections in central Delhi. The diversions, which came into effect at 6 am, will be regulated according to the prevailing law and order situation.The traffic advisory lists several affected stretches, including the Ashoka Road-Jantar Mantar Road roundabout, Tolstoy Marg-Janpath crossing, Jai Singh Road-Sansad Marg crossing, Rail Bhawan roundabout, Patel Chowk, Gol Dak Khana and Windsor Place.Traffic may also be disrupted at Mandi House, the Chelmsford Road and Sansad Marg intersections with Connaught Place’s outer circle, the Barakhamba Road intersection and the Minto Road-Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg junction.Other locations where traffic movement could be affected include the Chelmsford Road-Connaught Place outer circle intersection, Bharion Road-Mahatma Gandhi Marg intersection, Lodhi Road flyover, Neela Gumbad roundabout, Madarsa T-point, Samrat Hotel roundabout, Sardar Patel Marg-Panchsheel Marg crossing, the underpasses beneath the Bhikaji Cama Place and Moti Bagh flyovers, and the Ring Road-San Martin Marg intersection.Visuals from the protest site early on Saturday showed a substantial police presence, with personnel deployed along roads and at barricades across the city. Traffic was moving smoothly as police monitored vehicles entering and leaving the area, stopping and checking some cars.Commuters have been advised to avoid non-essential travel and allow extra time for their journeys. Those travelling through New Delhi and central Delhi to railway stations, inter-state bus terminals or the airport have been asked to plan their journeys accordingly.The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation had announced that entry and exit gates at 45 metro stations would remain closed from 9 pm on Friday until the situation returned to normal on Saturday. A 24-hour mobile internet suspension in central Delhi came into effect at 10 pm on Friday.Delhi Traffic Police said the restrictions would be reviewed based on real-time assessments and could be relaxed or tightened as required.
