Patna: Chief justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday inaugurated the country’s first victim rights centre (VRC) at the Bihar State Legal Services Authority (BSLSA) headquarters near the museum on Budh Marg in Patna.He also flagged off nine multi-utility vehicles (MUVs) to provide legal aid at citizens’ doorsteps across Bihar, released a helpline for transgenders under the SITARA scheme and inaugurated the executive lounge and waiting hall at the new Patna high court building.Patna high court chief justice V Kameswar Rao, justices Sudhir Singh, Rajeev Ranjan Prasad and other judges were present.Addressing the gathering, Surya Kant said, “Justice must not wait for a person who urgently requires it rather justice should itself find its way for such person” and said the initiatives would help fulfil constitutional commitments.The VRC will provide free medical, psychological, legal and social assistance through a single window to vulnerable persons, elderly victims, survivors of sexual offences and witnesses in sensitive cases. It will also provide legal and social security to children and dependents of convicts serving prison sentences in Bihar.The helpline will provide transgender persons a single point of contact for information on legal rights and remedies.
