Pune: Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) aspirant Prathamesh Deshmukh (28), who was found hanging in his rented flat in Shaniwar Peth on Wednesday morning, had run into debt owing to indulging in online betting, police said on Friday.Deputy commissioner of police (Zone I) Krushikesh Rawale said, “After conducting enquiries with his relatives and friends, our team found that the deceased youngster was into online betting. He had lost a huge sum of money in betting after borrowing it from various people. He had borrowed over Rs2.5 lakh from various people and listed their names in the suicide note.”Deshmukh, hailing from Khasapuri in Paranda taluka of Dharashiv district, was living in Pune for the past three to four years and preparing for MPSC examinations. According to Vishrambaug police, Deshmukh had developed the habit of online betting while preparing for the competitive exams, for which he borrowed large sums, they said.“Deshmukh narrated in the two-page note that he was worried about the repayment of his debt. His family members had also come to know about the debt and had tried to counsel him,” Rawale further said.
