Prayagraj: After basking in bright sunshine during the first half of Tuesday, Prayagraj was lashed by a spell of heavy rain around 3 pm, bringing relief from sultry conditions but creating fresh problems for commuters as several roads and intersections were already grappling with waterlogging following heavy showers a day earlier.The sudden downpour drenched almost all localities of the city, leading to the accumulation of rainwater at several key stretches and intersections. The rain affected traffic movement as commuters had to negotiate waterlogged roads, particularly in areas where drainage remained clogged or excess water from Monday’s showers had not fully receded.The weather remained largely bright and sunny during the morning and early afternoon, with sunshine making the conditions warm. However, dark clouds gradually gathered over the city before the heavy spell around 3 pm changed the weather conditions, and the downpour for around one hour was enough to inundate several low-lying areas.According to the weather data, the maximum temperature in the city was recorded at 33.4 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was 25.6 degrees Celsius. The city received 6.8 mm of rainfall. The relative humidity on Tuesday ranged from 91%-98%.The latest spell of rain came a day after heavy showers caused widespread waterlogging in several parts of Prayagraj, leaving roads and low-lying areas inundated. With Tuesday’s downpour adding to the accumulated water, commuters in several localities faced renewed difficulties.The showers, however, brought some respite from the humid conditions and helped bring down temperatures in the afternoon. Residents in areas that witnessed intense rain welcomed the change in weather, even as traffic movement was disrupted on waterlogged roads. The intermittent monsoon activity is likely to keep the weather conditions unsettled in the city, with residents advised to remain cautious while travelling through waterlogged stretches.The rain also brought relief to the farming community, particularly in Prayagraj and its neighbouring districts, which have witnessed late arrival of monsoon and deficit rainfall this rainy season. Farmers said the fresh showers would help replenish soil moisture and benefit standing crops, including paddy and other kharif crops, while reducing the need for immediate irrigation.
