For a few terrifying moments in Odense, football stood still once again.Almost exactly five years after Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland, the Danish midfielder collapsed on the pitch during Sunday’s international friendly against Ukraine, prompting immediate medical intervention and the eventual abandonment of the match.The scenes were distressingly familiar. Midway through the second half, Eriksen suddenly clutched his chest and fell to the ground around 10 yards away from the ball. Players from both teams immediately reacted as medical personnel rushed onto the pitch, while teammates and opponents formed a protective ring around the former Manchester United midfielder. Fortunately, the outcome was far more reassuring than the images initially suggested.
Eriksen regains consciousness as match is abandoned
The incident occurred in the 65th minute of Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine in Odense.As treatment began, fans inside the stadium started singing Eriksen’s name and applauding in support. After approximately 10 minutes of medical attention, the match was abandoned, with Eriksen later leaving the pitch to a standing ovation before being taken to hospital alongside his wife Sabrina.The Danish Football Association later confirmed that the 34-year-old was conscious.“Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances,” the federation said in a statement.A similar message was displayed on the stadium’s giant screen, informing supporters: “The match is over. Christian Eriksen is in good condition under the circumstances.”
Denmark doctor reveals pacemaker ‘responded as it should’
Around 10 minutes after Eriksen had left the field, Denmark national team doctor Morten Boesen provided a more detailed update.Boesen, who was also part of the medical team credited with saving Eriksen’s life during the Euro 2020 cardiac arrest, revealed that the midfielder had briefly lost consciousness before recovering quickly.“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.“Now he will be examined further at the hospital to find out what caused the incident.“We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well.“He asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was OK.”The reference to the pacemaker relates to the Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Eriksen received following his cardiac arrest in 2021. The device monitors heart rhythms and can intervene if dangerous abnormalities occur.
Emotional scenes unfold across the stadium
Several Denmark players were visibly distressed as the seriousness of the situation became apparent.

According to Sky Sports, captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg witnessed the incident unfold from close range.“There’s a throw-in. I go out to the side and I turn around a bit, and I see Christian on his way to the floor. We know a little about how he reacts, what that means.“(Everyone) reacted super-fast and with respect. I can only compliment how much courage those who took care of Christian on the field had.“I can’t say much more than you get a shock. The most important thing is that Christian is doing well.”Once the game had officially been called off, players and staff from both teams stood arm in arm in a large circle while Denmark coach Brian Riemer addressed the group.“The most important thing is that Christian is doing well and he is. He has left the field and he has sent his regards to the players,” Riemer said.“Now it’s about us standing together, as you could see that we did in the most dignified way on the field. So it’s about standing together now and of course ensuring that everyone has a shoulder to lean on from here.”

Ukraine’s coaching staff also chose not to discuss football afterwards. Assistant coach Andrea Maldera used his post-match media appearance solely to express support for Eriksen, his family, the Danish squad and supporters.“Out of respect for him – it would not be right to talk about football right now.”
A reminder of the darkest day of Eriksen’s career
The incident inevitably brought back memories of June 12, 2021, when Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s European Championship match against Finland in Copenhagen.His heart stopped for approximately five minutes before he was revived through life-saving CPR and emergency medical treatment. Eriksen later reflected on the experience in an interview with BBC Sport.“I can remember everything apart from the five minutes.“I was told afterwards it was five minutes, otherwise I remember everything – the throw in, the ball hitting my knee and then I don’t know what happened after.“Then I woke up with people around me and felt the pressure on my chest, trying to get my breathing back, and then I woke up – I opened my eyes and saw people around me, I didn’t really understand what was going on.“Then in the ambulance I heard someone say ‘how long was he out for’ and someone said ‘five minutes’ and that was the first time I had heard I was gone.”Following his recovery, Eriksen was fitted with an ICD. Italian regulations prevented him from continuing his career with Inter Milan while using the device, leading to the termination of his contract.Yet what followed became one of football’s most remarkable comeback stories.
Eriksen’s remarkable return to football
Just eight months after suffering a cardiac arrest, Eriksen returned to professional football with Brentford in early 2022.He later joined Manchester United, making 107 appearances, scoring eight goals and helping the club win the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.After leaving Old Trafford when his contract expired in 2025, Eriksen moved to German side Wolfsburg, where he currently plays.Sunday’s match against Ukraine marked his 151st appearance for Denmark.Before the abandonment, Denmark had led 2-1 thanks to goals from Patrick Dorgu and Joakim Maehle, while Viktor Tsygankov scored for Ukraine.Ultimately, however, the scoreline became irrelevant.The overwhelming feeling inside the stadium, across Danish football and throughout the wider football world was one of relief after confirmation that Eriksen was conscious, responsive and recovering following another frightening medical emergency on the pitch.
