New Delhi, Aug 11: National Conference MP Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan on Monday met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and urged the Centre to reconsider the proposed Sopore-Kupwara railway line, highlighting the lack of rail connectivity in Kupwara and the district’s socio-economic and strategic importance.
Ramzan said Kupwara is among the farthest and strategically important border districts of Jammu and Kashmir and currently has no railway connectivity despite its large geographical area and population.
He said the proposed railway link would provide an important connection to the district and improve access to remote areas, including Karnah, Keran and Machil.
The MP also highlighted the importance of the project for the region’s horticulture and agriculture sectors, particularly the transportation of apples and other agricultural produce to markets across the country. He said improved rail connectivity would help reduce transportation time and costs for farmers and growers.
Ramzan said the railway line could also boost tourism, trade and employment, besides improving access to healthcare and educational opportunities in remote areas.
He urged the Railway Minister to examine the project from a long-term socio-economic and strategic perspective, keeping in view the region’s growing population, developmental needs and its horticulture and tourism potential.
According to Ramzan, Vaishnaw assured him that the matter would be accorded top priority and that the MP would be informed about further progress on the proposal.
