Vasco: The proposed removal of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue at Headland-Sada junction in Mormugao is likely to be deferred due to the need for adequate deployment of armed police and arrangements to handle a possible law and order situation.Mormugao Port Authority had planned to remove the statue on April 16 following directions of the high court. A meeting chaired by the South Goa collector, attended by senior police officers, revenue officials, and MPA representatives, reviewed the situation in detail. Authorities decided to further assess the ground situation in coordination with all agencies before taking a final call.Meanwhile, Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar said people would gather in large numbers to oppose the move. “The decision has hurt public sentiments,” he said, adding that locals are strongly against the removal.
