CHENNAI: Shanthi and her husband Mahendra Simhan, who were arrested in connection with the child rape case registered against granite baron R Veeramani, were sent to police custody for three days by a special court for Pocso cases on Thursday. Special judge S Padma granted the three-day custody of the two to the Central Crime Branch’s Anti-Vice Squad allowing an application moved by the squad.According to police, Veeramani had already been arrested and taken into custody for questioning in connection with the case. Based on information provided by him during the interrogation, police have sought custody of Shanthi and Mahendra Simhan for further investigation.In its petition, the squad stated that it needed to ascertain the number of minor girls who may have been affected, the period during which the alleged offences took place and the identities of other people who may have been involved.Police said Shanthi and her husband Mahendra Simhan (managing director of Gem Software Solutions) managed the Teynampet premises, abetted the offences, failed to report the abuse and were involved in the destruction of evidence and financial transactions with Veeramani. Shanthi is specifically accused by investigators of facilitating and procuring minors for Veeramani.
