Times News NetworkCanacona: The Chapoli dam in Canacona has seen a sharp rise in water levels following increased rainfall since last week. On Tuesday, the dam stood at 33.2m reduced level (RL).Last year, the dam reached its maximum capacity of 38.8RL on July 20, when it began overflowing at the spillway.Chapoli dam is the only irrigation source for Devbag and Gulem, supplying about 15MLD. The water resources separtment (WRD) also releases 10 MLD to the Morkhard water treatment plant, meeting the drinking water needs of over 70% of the Canacona taluka, said WRD executive engineer (Margao) and Canacona in charge, Dhananjay Nagvekar.He said the water level has been rising steadily since last week and, if rainfall remains consistent for another week, it is expected to increase significantly.Commissioned in 2000, the 760m earthen dam supports irrigation and drinking water needs in Canacona. Located on the windward side and surrounded by the Sahyadri range, it typically receives heavy rainfall. The reservoir is fed by a nullah originating in the Chapoli hills and nearby areas, with a catchment area of 6.8sqkm.
