Chandrapur: A sharp rise in electricity demand amid the intensifying summer has prompted the Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station to ramp up preparedness, with officials confirming ample fuel reserves and operational readiness to meet the surge.Chief engineer Anil Kathoye said the plant, which supplies nearly 25% of Maharashtra’s electricity, currently holds around 5 million metric tonnes of coal, which is sufficient to sustain uninterrupted power generation during peak demand.Addressing environmental concerns, Kathoye noted that Units 1 and 2, long identified as major pollution sources, have already been decommissioned. Units 3 and 4 are also slated for phased closure. However, these units will continue operating with necessary technical upgrades until replacement capacity becomes functional, ensuring no disruption in supply.The plant is also exploring future expansion through a proposed 800 MW advanced unit. The project, still under consideration, may adopt either supercritical or ultra-supercritical technology. Kathoye indicated that if the latter is approved, it could mark a first for both Maharashtra and the country.Such technology significantly improves efficiency by reducing coal consumption and lowering emissions, aligning with evolving environmental standards.Officials reiterated that balancing rising energy needs with sustainability remains a key priority.
