Varanasi: A chain snatcher sustained a bullet injury to his leg and was arrested following an encounter with Shivpur police on Friday morning.ACP (Cantt) Apoorv Pandey said Shivpur SHO Ajit Kumar Verma and his team were on night patrol when informers tipped them off about criminals moving on the Ring Road in the early hours. The team cordoned off the Sindhora-Chandmari underpass and began checking vehicles. During the drive, they signalled a youth on a motorcycle to stop. He tried to flee but fell after his bike skidded.He opened fire at the police team and in retaliatory action, he was shot in the leg and caught. The injured man was identified as Badal Sahni of Kirahiya under Bhelupur police station. Police recovered a country-made pistol, cartridges, Rs 3,630 cash and a motorcycle from the spot.During initial questioning, Sahni said he and his associate Aman Yadav had snatched a woman’s gold chain in Vishwanathpuri Colony on April 30 and sold it at a jeweller’s shop. They spent most of the money on drugs for consumption, he said. ACP Pandey said more cases are lodged against Sahni at police stations like Bhelupur, and efforts have been intensified to nab his accomplice.
