CHENNAI: The Union govt has granted 10 projects totalling Rs 785.21 crore from the power system development fund (PSDF) for renovating and modernising substations, establishing technical and IT infrastructure, installing bus reactors, communication & data acquisition systems, and setting up battery storage system (BESS) in Tamil Nadu, said minister of state for power Shripad Naik.Responding to queries raised by MP Kamal Haasan on the power allocation, proposal status, and central assistance for the state, Naik said under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) launched in July 2021, projects worth Rs 19,235 crore for smart metering and ₹9,568 crore for distribution infrastructure/ loss-reduction have been sanctioned for Tamil Nadu.On the budgetary support extended through the Union new and renewable energy, Naik said out of 8.38 GW planned for RE integration, 2.38 GW of associated Inter-State Transmission Systems (ISTS) transmission network projects are currently under active implementation in Tamil Nadu.He said Tamil Nadu, for the current period as on June 30, 2026, stands allocated 6,718.4 MW from Central Sector Generating Stations (CGSs), comprising 6,139.9 MW of firm power and 578.5 MW of unallocated power. He said Tamil Nadu’s peak electricity demand was fully met without any deficit over the last five financial years and the current financial year (up to June 2026).Naik said according to official data submitted to Parliament, Tamil Nadu saw its peak power demand rise from 16,891 MW in 2021–22 to a record 21,000 MW in the current financial year 2026–27 (up to June 2026). Across all monitored periods, the state successfully met 100% of its peak demand, recording 0.0% demand not met.
