Calangute: Calangute residents have urged the traffic cell to take action against tourist buses, minibuses and taxis which park along the recently widened roads even though there are no-parking signboards.“The Calangute-Mapusa road from St Alex Church to Palmarinha resort was recently widened and no-parking signboards have been put. But the entire stretch is occupied by large buses. Buses are parked even on the turn at Bhodkovod to Porbawaddo which obstruct traffic and block the view of drivers. This can lead to accidents,” locals said.Besides buses, app-based taxis have also started parking in the area while the drivers await passengers.Taxi owners and unions in the Calangute coastal belt had for the last few years been demanding action against app-based taxis whose owners and drivers would park on the side of the widened roads near the church while waiting for customers.Announcing the no-parking zones last month, Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira said the road from St Alex Church to Palmarinha resort and on Chogm road from the church to Vidya Niketan school has been notified as no-parking. Also from St Anthony chapel to Little Flower School. The “decision has been taken in the interest of maintaining cleanliness and protecting the surrounding area. It was observed that vehicles parked along these roads were littering and dumping garbage into nearby fields, which had been recently cleaned,” he said.
