NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday gave a one-year extension in service to cabinet secretary TV Somanathan and home secretary Govind Mohan. This is the first such extension for the two key officers at the Centre. Their fixed tenure of two years was coming to an end this month.In an order, the personnel department said the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in service of Somanathan as cabinet secretary for one year beyond Aug 30, 2026. Somanathan, a 1987-batch IAS officer of TN cadre, was appointed to the post in Aug 2024. Mohan’s service has been extended beyond August 22, 2026, up to August 22, 2027, as per the order.

Mohan, a 1989-batch IAS officer of Sikkim cadre, was appointed home secretary in Aug 2024.All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules have a provision to extend the services of the defence secretary, foreign secretary, home secretary, director of information and broadcasting, secretary of the Research and Analysis Wing, and a few others beyond the retirement age of 60 years.
