Bhubaneswar: As concerns over E20 petrol, vehicle compatibility and rising fuel expenses continue to trigger discussions among motorists, many prospective buyers in Odisha are rethinking their next vehicle purchase.Customers at showrooms across Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are not just asking about the vehicle’s price or brand, but whether to stick with a petrol vehicle, opt for an E20-compatible model or make the jump to an electric vehicle (EV).Dealers say a growing number of customers are arriving better informed and are seeking detailed comparisons of running costs before making a decision. While E20-compliant vehicles have become the industry standard, apprehensions surrounding mileage and long-term maintenance costs of older vehicles are prompting consumers to look more closely at EV alternatives.“We are seeing customers ask very specific questions about fuel costs and ownership expenses. Many are comparing petrol and electric models before taking a call,” said Vidhan Jena, sales executive at a leading two-wheeler dealership in Bhubaneswar.For daily commuters, managing their finances is becoming more important. Office-goers travelling 40 to 50 km a day said fuel expenditure has emerged as a major consideration amid fluctuating petrol prices. Several consumers said they are evaluating EVs not necessarily because of environmental concerns but because of their lower running costs.“I was planning to buy a petrol-run scooter, but after hearing the discussions centered around E20, fuel expenses and future maintenance, I am also considering an electric scooter. The difference in daily running cost is significant,” said software professional Abhishek Naik from Patia.Automobile experts, however, caution against making decisions based solely on concerns about E20. They have pointed out that most new vehicles sold today are designed to operate on E20 fuel and manufacturers have made necessary changes to the fuel-system components.“Consumers should assess their daily usage pattern rather than react to fears. If someone travels long distances every day and has access to charging infrastructure, an EV may make sense. For others, a modern E20-compatible petrol vehicle remains a practical option,” said automotive expert Satyabrata Mohanty.EV dealers claim enquiries have risen noticeably over the past month. While not all enquiries convert into sales, many visitors are exploring EVs for the first time. Dealers attribute the trend to a combination of fuel cost concerns, increased awareness and discussions about E20.“We have definitely seen more people asking about electric scooters and cars. A section of customers owning older petrol vehicles wants to understand whether transitioning to an EV would save them money over the long term,” said Rohit Agarwal, a dealer associated with an electric two-wheeler brand.Consumer groups say the debate highlights a broader transition underway in the country’s mobility sector. While E20 is aimed at reducing dependence on imported crude oil and promoting cleaner fuels, its rollout is also encouraging motorists to examine the true cost of vehicle ownership.
