Srinagar, Aug 8: Residents of several relatively unexplored tourist destinations in Kashmir, including Gurez, Uri, Boniyar, Karnah, Teetwal and Tangdhar, have urged the government to organise cultural programmes and festivals in these areas to showcase their rich heritage, traditions and natural beauty and bring them onto the tourism map.
The residents said that while destinations such as Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg continue to attract a large number of visitors, several border and remote areas of Kashmir possess immense tourism potential but remain largely unexplored due to limited promotion and inadequate tourism-related activities.
They said cultural festivals featuring local music, traditional dance, handicrafts, cuisine, folklore, sports and art could provide visitors with an opportunity to experience the distinct identity of these areas while also creating livelihood opportunities for local communities.
“Gurez has a unique culture, traditional architecture, music and breathtaking landscapes, but its potential is still not being fully utilised. A major cultural festival here could introduce the valley to tourists from across the country,” said a resident of Gurez.
Similarly, residents of Uri said the area has much more to offer than being known only as a border town.
“Uri has a rich history, heritage sites, scenic villages and the Jhelum River. If the government organises cultural and tourism events here, it can change the perception of Uri and encourage tourists to stay and explore the area,” said Abrar Ahmad, a local resident.
Residents of Boniyar also called for events showcasing the area’s natural and cultural heritage.
“Boniyar has beautiful landscapes, forests, villages and several unexplored spots. Cultural programmes can become a platform for local artists, artisans and young people while simultaneously attracting visitors,” said Irfan Ahmad, a resident of Boniyar.
In Karnah, residents said the area’s distinctive traditions, handicrafts, cuisine and historical links could become major attractions for tourists if properly promoted.
“Karnah has a culture and way of life that is different from other parts of Kashmir. Tourists should get an opportunity to experience this heritage. A festival based on local culture, food, music and handicrafts could put Karnah on the tourism map,” local said.
Residents of Teetwal and Tangdhar also urged the authorities to hold events along the border areas, saying such initiatives could promote tourism as well as provide economic opportunities to local communities.
The residents said regular cultural programmes could also help strengthen the local economy by increasing demand for homestays, local transport, handicrafts, traditional food and other services.
They urged the Tourism Department and district administrations to prepare an annual calendar of events for lesser-known destinations and ensure their promotion through social media, travel platforms and national tourism campaigns.
