Bokaro: Hundreds of dead fish were found floating in Sector 4-based Surya Sarovar near the Surya Temple on Monday morning, raising concerns among residents over the upkeep of the water body maintained by the public health department of Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL).“The pond is cleaned only during Chhath Puja. Garbage piles up in the area, emiting a foul smell,” said Mahavir Masi, a local.Another resident, Dalo Yadav, said, “The incident might be a result of polluted water, low oxygen level, or even poisoning. Only an investigation can establish the truth,” adding, “Some people have taken away the dead fish. They should not consume them, as contaminated or poisoned fish can lead to serious health issues.”BSL chief of communication Manikant Dhan said, “Preliminary findings point to large-scale idol immersion and disposal of puja materials as the likely cause. Colours and chemicals used in idols can disturb the ecological balance of the water body and reduce dissolved oxygen levels, which may have led to the fish deaths. A detailed examination is under way.”“Fishing rights in the pond was allotted to a displaced-category agency through due process. The lease will be valid till July 2027. The agency has been directed to remove the dead fish immediately,” he added.Appealing to residents to help keep the water body clean, BSL said its public health department has initiated measures to restore water quality and ecological balance.
