Mumbai: The BMC has issued 29 stop-work notices and 270 show-cause notices to construction sites for failing to comply with pollution mitigation guidelines till Oct 22. Meanwhile, BMC commissioner Ashwini Bhide has said that developers and construction professionals are responsible for controlling dust at construction sites and on adjoining roads. She has directed officials to take strict action in cases of negligence.Of the 270 show-cause notices, as many as 105 were issued in the BMC’s N-ward, which covers areas such as Ghatkopar and Vidyavihar. Another 52 notices were issued in T ward, which includes Mulund and Nahur, while 42 were issued in R-South ward, which covers areas such as Kandivli and Charkop. Of the 29 stop-work notices issued during the same period, eight were issued in K-South ward, which covers parts of Andheri and Vile Parle (East), while four were issued in K-North ward, which covers Jogeshwari East and parts of Andheri East.Recently, the civic body imposed a penalty of Rs 35,000 and issued a stop-work notice to a construction site in Lokhandwala, Andheri (West), for causing dust pollution during demolition work. Bhide said developers and construction professionals must take preventive measures to curb dust pollution. These include keeping construction sites clean, ensuring that dust does not become airborne and complying with the prescribed rules.Under the air pollution mitigation and enforcement action plan drawn up by the BMC for 2026, developers are required to clean roads around their construction sites, with the distance depending on the size of the project. Sites spread over up to 4,000 sq m must ensure road cleaning for up to 100 metres on either side. Projects measuring between 4,000 and 10,000 sq m must cover up to 200 metres on either side, while larger sites must ensure road cleaning for up to 500 metres on either side. Recently, an NGO had found that many of the monitors of air quality sensors put up at construction sites did not match those of the monitoring stations in the vicinity.Bhide also directed officials to implement the High Court’s directions regarding firecrackers. Emphasising the need to create awareness among citizens about noise pollution and the adverse health effects caused by firecrackers, she said people should opt for green firecrackers instead of polluting ones.
