Baramulla, Sep 16: Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Sunil Sharma on Wednesday interacted with residents and representatives of different sections of society from Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora districts as part of the BJP legislative group’s pre-session public outreach programme.
The interaction was held at Dak Bungalow, Baramulla, where people raised issues related to roads, bridges, water supply, tourism, electricity charges, employment, outsourced workers, NHM and Anganwadi employees and municipal elections.
Sharma said the BJP legislative group had decided to visit district headquarters across Jammu and Kashmir ahead of the upcoming Assembly session to hear public grievances and raise them in the appropriate forums.
“A large number of people have come from different parts of North Kashmir with their issues. Our legislative group has decided that before the Assembly session, we will visit every district headquarters, listen to the problems of the people and ensure that their genuine concerns are raised in the appropriate forum,” he said.
Sharma said the concerns raised during the Baramulla interaction largely related to basic services and governance. He said issues concerning roads, bridges, water supply and civic infrastructure needed attention.
“The people have brought very basic issues before us. Some have concerns regarding roads and bridges, some regarding water supply, while others have raised tourism and other civic issues. These are basic governance issues and they cannot be ignored,” he said.
On unemployment and employment-related grievances, Sharma said the concerns of unemployed youth and workers required government intervention.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening grassroots democratic institutions, particularly in the context of the absence of municipal elections.
Sharma said the issues raised during the outreach would be taken up in the Assembly and at other appropriate levels.
“Our responsibility as the opposition is to ensure that the voice of the common man reaches the government and the Assembly,” he said.
The programme was attended by J&K BJP general secretary Anwar Khan, All Cells co-incharge Baramulla Prabhari Bilal Parray and other party leaders.
