Modi is likely to arrive at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati at around 10.15 am on May 12. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, along with senior BJP leaders from across the country, are expected to attend the swearing-in function.
At the legislative party meetings, which will be attended by BJP leaders JP Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, the new leader of the legislature party is likely to be elected. Saikia said a decision on the new cabinet, including the possible induction of fresh faces, would be taken after the meeting.
From 60 seats in 2021, the party won 82 this time in the 126-member assembly. The combined NDA won 102 seats. Both Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front won 10 seats each.
Congress managed to win just 19 seats. Of these, 18 were Muslim candidates and one Hindu. In 2021, the Congress had won 26 seats. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, who made his assembly debut from Jorhat seat, lost to Hitendra Nath Goswami by a huge margin of 23,182 votes.
TMC has won one seat. Raijor Dal won two seats.
The All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), which won 15 seats in the previous elections, was reduced to two. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, who is himself from the minority community, termed the Assam Congress as the new Muslim League. Ajmal said Congress has lost its political relevance in Assam and was effectively “finished” in the state.
