Agartala: Following chief minister Manik Saha’s announcement that the state would recover the cost of property damaged in post-poll violence under the Tripura Recovery of Damages to Public and Private Property Act, 2021, Tipra Motha supporters allegedly set a BJP party office in Nutan Bazar of Manu Bonkul in South Tripura on fire on Monday night.The incident was followed by attacks on several properties of BJP supporters, the party said. BJP mandal president Bipul Bhowmik alleged that Motha workers had been involved in vandalism and criminal acts for three days and said he filed a written complaint with the police.Bhowmik also said another BJP office in the Purana Bazar area of Manu Bonkul was reportedly attacked around the same time. In a separate incident, around 20 rubber trees were cut down in the plantation of BJP youth leader Sushanta Mog, the BJP alleged. Sporadic violence has been reported in the area since the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) election results were declared on April 17.
Tipra Motha leaders declined to comment on the allegations.Meanwhile, Saha, along with the chief secretary, home secretary, DGP and other senior officials, visited violence-affected areas under Khowai district on Tuesday. He said none of the accused involved in the violence would be spared and that those responsible would be held accountable. The CM said compensation for damage would be recovered from the perpetrators and directed to support victims.Saha announced financial aid for 258 families affected by post-election violence after the ADC results. He met families who had taken shelter at Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel after being displaced by alleged attacks from Tipra Motha cadres.Tipra Motha won 24 of the 28 ADC seats. After the results, several BJP supporters across West Tripura, Sepahijala, Khowai and South Tripura districts reportedly left their homes amid incidents of vandalism, property damage and injuries.The state govt sanctioned an immediate relief package of Rs 25,000 per affected family, with district magistrates and collectors tasked with ensuring prompt distribution. An initial allocation of Rs 64.5 lakh has been made.
