Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said the BJP has 32 surplus seats as per the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in which the BJP won 96 assembly segments. He said the BJP needs to win only 64 seats in Assam to form the government for the third consecutive term.

Assam is scheduled to hold assembly polls in a few months. The state has 126 assembly seats.

Talking to media persons on Tuesday, Sarma said, “In 2024 Lok Sabha polls, we won 96 assembly segments and to form a government again in Assam, we need to win 64 seats. We have 32 seats as surplus. From this, one can make out that BJP will once again form the government.”

Union home minister Amit Shah will visit Assam’s Dhemaji on January 30 to attend a youth festival at Kareng Chapori.

In the present assembly, BJP has 64 MLAs while its allies Asom Gana Parishad, United People’s Party Liberal and Bodoland People’s Front have nine, seven and three legislators, respectively.

In the Opposition camp, the Congress has 26 MLAs, AIUDF 15, CPI(M) one, and one Independent.
