Dibrugarh: BJP national president Nitin Nabin on Wednesday set a target for party workers in Assam to secure at least 50 per cent of the votes in every booth in the upcoming assembly elections.

Accusing the Congress of using Assam as a land for “vote bank politics”, he said the opposition party is “restless” as the BJP government is “throwing Bangladeshi infiltrators out of the country”.

Commencing his two-day Assam visit by addressing party workers at a ‘Panna Pramukh Sammelan’ here, Nabin set a target for the cadre to pocket at least 50 per cent of the votes in every booth in the upcoming assembly elections.

“We are here to score a hat-trick victory. But I am not satisfied with just a simple victory. I give you a target — bring 50 per cent votes from all booths. This will sink the Congress boat forever,” he added.

The Assam Assembly elections for 126 constituencies are likely to take place in March-April this year.

Presently, the ruling BJP’s strength in the Assam Assembly is 64, while its allies AGP has nine MLAs, UPPL has seven and BPF has three members.
In the opposition camp, the Congress has 26 MLAs, AIUDF has 15 members and CPI(M) has one MLA. There is an Independent legislator as well.Nabin further charged the Congress with compromising with national security when it was in power.

“It will be a message to all those Congress leaders who joined hands with foreign powers and played with national security.

“The Congress indulged in vote bank politics in Assam. They had no policy, intention and capability to run the state. But the BJP has all three qualities and we are working with the people,” he added.

Nabin claimed that some people are asking why Bangladeshi infiltrators are being expelled from Assam.

“I want to ask them that do they have the liberty to snatch the rights of the Assamese people? Why are they supporting the infiltrators? I thank CM Himanta Biswa Sarma for ensuring the Assamese people’s rights. That’s why the entire Congress is restless,” he added.

Nabin claimed that the process to expel Bangladeshi infiltrators from Assam is having its impact in West Bengal and Kerala.

“There was a time during the Congress regime when the Pakistani flag used to fly in Kashmir. That scenario has changed after the Narendra Modi government came to power,” he asserted.

Continuing his tirade against the Congress, Nabin claimed that while BJP is now working to develop the Northeast and Assam, the region was the “land of clashes” during the Congress’s tenure and news used to be only about clashes.

“We are working to develop Assam, which is the Northeast’s gateway. Today’s Assam is known as land of opportunity, not clashes. The credit goes to the BJP leadership,” he added.

Nabin remembered his college days in Delhi and said a lot of students from Assam had gone to the national capital to escape from the clashes in the state.

“Today, the situation has completely changed due to the BJP government. We are very strict regarding national security, Assam’s integrity and against corruption,” he said.

Nabin said the soldiers have been given full freedom to give befitting replies to the enemies, unlike the Congress government which used to remain a mute spectator even if a soldier was beheaded.

“This change has come only due to your votes. Everything is getting changed due to the able leadership of PM Modi. Assam is also changing now and we need to strengthen the state more,” he added.
