Mangaluru: Akhila Bharatha Billavara Union has urged Congress to ensure representation for Billava community leaders in the cabinet when DK Shivakumar takes oath as chief minister.Vikhyatananda Swami of Arya Ediga Mahasamsthana, Soluru, told reporters here Sunday that MLC BK Hariprasad, a seasoned politician and secular leader, should be given a ministerial berth in Shivakumar’s cabinet. He demanded representation for the Billava community in the new council of ministers expected to be formed after the swearing-in of Karnataka’s new chief minister.The seer, along with members of the union, said that Hariprasad is a veteran politician and an active Billava leader who has served in the Rajya Sabha and as leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka legislative council.“Hariprasad is a committed leader with secular values as well as an ardent follower of Brahmasri Narayana Guru. It was under his leadership that the centenary of the Narayana Guru – Mahatma Gandhi dialogue was organised in Mangaluru successfully,” the seer said.The Billava community is a significant population segment in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. However, it has not achieved political representation commensurate with its numerical strength, he said, adding that Hariprasad should represent the community in the govt.As a leader of the backward classes, Hariprasad has been working to uplift the downtrodden. His representation will enhance the political strength of the council of ministers, he said.
