The Supreme Court on Monday said media organisations should avoid recording statements of Twisha Sharma’s family members and not reduce their grief “to sound bites”, even as Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that “it is better to have a divorced daughter than a dead one” during the hearing in the alleged dowry death case.

Hearing the suo motu matter, a bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant observed that the family was undergoing immense trauma and requested the media to exercise restraint while covering the case.

During the proceedings, Mehta said, “Without attributing motives to either side, the moral of the story is clear that it is better to have a divorced daughter than a dead one.”
