Nagpur: Railway quarters built at Ajni are showing signs of deterioration barely four years after construction, raising serious questions over project quality. The Central Railway Mazdoor Sangh (CRMS) said 96 quarters, constructed in 2021-22, have already developed problems, with employees complaining of peeling plaster and rainwater seeping through roofs.Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM), Central Railway, Aman Mittal said the quarters were built by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), and the complaints had been forwarded to it. “An inspection will be carried out, after which further course of action will be decided,” he added.Employees who have spent years in ageing railway housing say the deterioration of these newer quarters has compounded their concerns. They fear that such conditions could lead to electrical faults or other accidents. They urged the railway administration and RLDA to determine whether the problems are confined to individual quarters or point to wider deficiencies in the project.CRMS has demanded a high-level technical inspection of all 96 quarters, along with an examination of construction materials, workmanship, waterproofing, and quality-control procedures, and permanent repairs wherever defects are found. The union said railway employees should not be forced to live in homes that begin leaking and deteriorating within a few years of construction.
