Motihari: SSB sleuths guarding the India-Nepal border at Raxaul arrested a Bangladeshi national who was trying to cross the border illegally from India into Nepal near the Maitri Bridge. He was caught during routine patrolling and intensive checking late on Tuesday night. A day earlier, a Ukrainian woman was also arrested while trying to enter Nepal without valid documents.According to SSB sources, the Bangladeshi national was stopped at the Maitri Bridge after his activities appeared suspicious and his documents were checked. During the investigation, a Bangladeshi passport was recovered from his possession, confirming his identity as Mohammad Shiam Hossain (27), a resident of Munshiganj district in Bangladesh. The passport was issued by the department of immigration and passports (DIP), Dhaka, on Dec 8, 2020, and is valid until Dec 7, 2030. The document lists his permanent address as Baroy village in Srinagar Upazila of Munshiganj district.During the preliminary investigation, security agencies also learnt that he may have crossed the border earlier, although this could not be confirmed by him. The SSB is thoroughly examining his mobile phone, travel route, intended place of stay in Nepal, possible contacts in India, and the purpose of attempting to cross the border without valid documents.The SSB handed over the accused to Haraiya police station for legal action. According to the SHO of Haraiya police station Kishan Kumar, intensive interrogation is underway and necessary legal action is being taken. He was produced before the SDJM court in Raxaul on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody.Notably, 27 foreign nationals have been arrested along this border while trying to enter Nepal over the past one-and-a-half years. Consequently, the SSB has intensified surveillance, patrolling and document checks along the porous border.
