Palanpur: Banaskantha distrct of north Gujarat woke up to monsoon lashing with most talukas recording significant rainfall on Saturday.Torrential rainfall left a large number of towns and villages heavily waterlogged, affecting the normal life. This is the second heavy spell of rain within 10 days.The India Meterological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very rains at some places in Banaskantha and Pata, Kutch, Jamnagar and Morbi on Sunday. Heavy rains very likely at isolated places at isolated places in Surendranagar, Rajkot, Porbandar, Junagadh and Dwarka. In Banaskantha, Danta was the most battered with 106mm rainfall, followed by Lakhani (76mm), Amirgadh (68mm), Palanpur (65mm), Deesa (58mm) and Dantiwada (45mm).Severe waterlogging was witnessed aat Gathaman Crossroads on the Palanpur-Ahmedabad highway while residential areas on Dairy Road in Palanpur also saw heavy water accumulation. Downpours also lashed Rajkot district’s Dhoraji and Upleta towns in the evening as well as parts of Amreli district. Ceramic town Morbi also recorded 56mm rainfall while Dhoraji got 50mm.The IMD has attributed the widespread wet spell to the depression over northeast and northwest Rajasthan. Moving west-northwest at 20 kmph, it was centred near Sikar on Friday morning. The system is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area over the next 12 hours. Meanwhile, the monsoon trough passes through this depression, further intensifying rains. An upper air cyclonic circulation over Pakistan has also merged with this system, adding to the weather activity.Light to moderate rainfall is predicted in most parts of north, south central parts of Gujarat as well as Saurashtra till July 25.
